Dr. John Simpson- November 30, 1975

Dr. John Simpson began his teaching profession in about 1860 at Haysville School after he graduated from Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.  In 1871 he came to Mansfield as principal of the Fourth Ward School.  Two years later he was named superintendent of the city’s school system, which was rapidly growing.  He was there for 20 years.

Throughout his years in administration, the quality of Mansfield City Schools improved.   The system then became noticed across the state.  After the growth in the years after the Civil War, Superintendent Simpson promoted a building program to handle the increasing population of children.

While Simpson was superintendent, Newman School was opened in 1979.  Before he left in 1892, the first building designed to train high school students was opened at Fourth and Bowman St.  Simpson left in 1893 when he was 64 years old and went into the marble business.  On March 5, 1899 he died in his home.
